The Truth about Community Colleges

There are many misconceptions surrounding community colleges and in order to know if it is right for you, you should have the facts.

If you begin your college career at a community college and end up transferring to a four year school you can save yourself thousands of dollars in tuition costs.

One myth about community college is that many falsely believe is that no one who is successful has ever attended community college. The fact is that there are many highly successful people who did attend community college by going on to study at a four year university once their studies were complete at the community college level.

Many high school grads attend community college due to the fact that it is cheaper and a more flexible way of learning. Many community college students also have gotten financial aid, contrary to popular belief.

It is also falsely believed that four year colleges do not accept credits from community colleges. The fact here is that most of the credits earned at a community college do indeed transfer.

Colleges Answer Obama’s State of the Union

Higher education is more important than ever before with so many jobs hanging in the balance. In President Barack Obama’s State of the Union message, major emphasis was put on reducing the cost of college. Obama said that no one should end up broke trying to pay for college.

The President talked about setting a cap on annual student loan payments at 10 percent of a person’s income. He also wants student loans to be forgiven after a person has been paying them back for 20 years or after ten years if that student works in public service. President Obama also said that colleges must do their part to work to keep costs low.

Obama also asked the Senate to follow the House in passing a bill that would give community colleges over $9 billion. The nation has seen a dramatic increase in the number of students who have enrolled in community colleges due to the lower tuition costs and the convenience of attending a local school.

College Gender Gap Evens Out

The gender gap for college education favoring females has stopped growing, according to a recent report done by the American Council of Education.

In the US, men make up 43 percent of college enrollment-a statistic that has stayed the same since the year 2000. Following the women’s right movement in the 1970s, women made up the majority of enrollments at colleges.

In order for women to remain competitive in the labor market they need to have a college degree to even obtain some entry level jobs. In spite of the stabilization in the gender gap, more men may be enrolling in college due to the poor economic times.

The current recession could see more adult men returning to college in order to increase the amount of money they bring into their households as more men than women have lost their jobs during these rough times.

As more people, both men and women, realize the many benefits of obtaining a college education, we should see increases in the number of new students who attend college for the first time-both men and women.

OEDb’s Online College Rankings for the Year 2009

Despite the fact that online colleges are gaining respect from top employers a lack of transparency is stopping it from reaching its full potential. The current rankings by OEDb which is a database of accredited online education programs includes the most significant degree-granting undergrad online colleges that operate in the USA and DeVry University comes in at an impressive 25th place.

DeVry University is one of the leading providers in all of North America for business, technology, health care technology and management education and offers degrees that can get you on the right track to a great career. You can earn an online degree from DeVry in as little as three years and you can study both online and at one of the onsite campuses that are located in the U.S. and Canada.

The recent rankings were made using eight different metrics: acceptance rate, financial aid available, graduation rate, peer Web citations, retention rate, scholarly citations, student to faculty ratio and years accredited.

More and more people are opting to earning college degrees online today rather than attend a ‘brick and mortar’ school. The flexibility and low cost are the two main reasons that online schools are seeing a rise in enrollment numbers.

Colleges are Taking the Stress out of Finals

At the University of Virginia, students find more than toilet paper on the inside of the bathroom stalls. They are also finding copies of the Stall Seat Journal-the publication that offers tips on how to deal with end of the year stress.

At Ohio University in Dayton, students are offered playground games instead of study breaks and at Bentley University in Waltham, Mass., students painted a large canvass to hang on the bare walls of the fitness center to help them unwind during the week of finals.

Colleges do not promote staying up all night studying-especially when students have to take important tests the next day. At the University of Dayton, the school offers a 24 hour study space in the campus library and student union to assist students who are studying for finals.

Many colleges around the U.S. hold ‘midnight breakfasts’ where food is served to the students late at night. Some colleges hold ‘dog days’ during which faculty and staff will bring their dogs to campus to play with stressed-out students while other colleges offer prayer services to help students calm down.

Tips for College Grads Seeking Jobs

The U.S. Labor Department’s latest data shows that employers may be beginning to hire again but that does not mean that finding work will be easy for new college graduates.

If you are a recent college grad, here is some advice that may help you to find a job.

Be sure to make a personal connection before a interview. You should try to get to know the people t the places that you are trying to get a job so that you stand out from the crowd and so that your application will not get lost in the shuffle.

Be sure to use your college career center. Some of these centers provide graduating students with online and over-the-phone counseling as well as in-person assistance. Instead of simply searching the jobs posted, make full use of the career center’s services. These people can help you to build a great resume and will give you interviewing advice that could make all of the difference.

Consider your priorities when deciding on what type of job to go for. It is sometimes better to take a low paying job with a good job description and title rather than a good paying job with a bad title.

Never attend grad school just because you cannot find a job. The only reason you should go to graduate school is because you want to go, not because you are finding it difficult to land work.

Parents: Should Your Children Pay for Their Own College?

It is very tempting these days for parents who are struggling financially to tell their children that they must help pay for their own college educations but the long-term impact could be devastating, says a new survey.

The survey, Public Agenda, found that 63 percent of college grads surveyed had received some sort of financial help from their family and only 42 percent had not. The survey found that many parents cut off students who are on their way to flunking out.

The author of the report, Jean Johnson, says that many of the students who do not get help are spending are spending most of their time and money paying rent and other living costs that they do not have enough time study and end up dropping out for scheduling and financial reasons.

She says that the parent’s of today do not realize how much things have changed. Perhaps the parents were able to work their own way through college but tuition prices have gone up so much faster than wages over the past two decades, making it nearly impossible for students to work and attend college.

How to Get In-State Tuition Aid

There is a lot of talk these days about the skyrocketing costs of earning a college education, but prospective students should also be told that there are many affordable public colleges in smaller cities that are eager for students and that are willing to cut them a good deal. Some colleges even are extending these deals to students who do not possess top grades.

Some of these colleges have in-state tuition prices that is so low that the total cost of attending for a year-including travel expenses for students living out of state is below the $15,000 mark. This means that out of state students can attend for cheaper than in-state students. Many of these schools also give scholarships to the top-qualified students.

The reasons these colleges are luring out of state students are many. They are normally in states such as Kansas and North Dakota that have seen declining numbers of local teens and they are often located in rural areas. Also, these colleges do not rank well compared to more expensive colleges.

Many colleges that are located near state borders offer deep tuition discounts on their standard out of state fees to students from neighboring counties in another state.
